Discovering Mexico's colorful culture, delicious cuisine, and storied past moved me.
Mexican American culture was prevalent in my Austin, Texas upbringing. I later moved to San Diego during college and started visiting Mexico regularly. Eventually, I began traveling beyond the border cities to interior regions of the country.
These experiences added an additional layer to my cultural understanding, which have kept me returning. Thanks to the flexibility of remote work, I recently spent several weeks in Mexico City. Against the backdrop of the energetic streets, I roamed freely, sipping coffee at quaint cafes and trying out the tasty offerings at numerous eateries. Though many neighborhoods in the eclectic urban center felt busy, pockets of Roma and Condessa balanced out the hustle with serenity. Park Chapultepec's verdant pathways were a daytime escape from traffic and congestion. While at night, the Lucha Libre took center stage, filling arenas with laughter and cheering.
When I was younger, a stint as a server in a Mexican restaurant went beyond the typical work experience; it introduced me to a world of rich flavors and the intricate art of tequila and mezcal mixology. These memories convinced me that I needed to experience Oaxaca, so I converted several days of my trip into a culinary expedition. Between its legendary cuisine and the abundance of mezcal, my taste buds were not disappointed. Under the bright warm sun that illuminated the colonial era streets, I quickly fell for this charming city.
The familiarity of Mexico now makes returning time and time again extremely inviting. Each journey is like reuniting with a long-lost friend, full of opportunities to make new fond memories.
